Pet portrait questions, answered
Short, honest answers. If yours isn't here, write to hello@stillbrookportraits.com and a person will reply within one business day.
The portrait
Is it AI, or does a person make it?
Both, and we're happy to explain. Your portrait is a digital illustration made from your photo with AI tools. A person on our team then checks it against your photo before it prints, and our print partner in North America prints it. It is not painted with a brush, and we'll never say it is. How it's made · AI vs hand-painted, honestly compared
Will it really look like my pet?
You see it first, so you don't have to guess: the preview is free. If it doesn't look like them, try again, switch styles, or leave us a note. What you approve is what we print.
What styles can I choose?
Three. Watercolor: soft washes of color with careful detail in the face. Royal: your pet in a velvet cloak and a gold chain, like an old portrait in a grand house. Floral: a crown of garden flowers on a pale sage background. Memorial portraits use the soft watercolor style.
Can I change something after I see the preview?
Yes. You can try again or switch styles for free. If you'd like a small change, such as a darker ear or no collar, leave a note when you approve. We'll email you a proof to approve before printing, at no cost.
Is my pet's name printed on it?
On memorial portraits, you can add their name and dates, set beneath the portrait on canvas. On other portraits, the name you type is just for us, so we can use it in your emails.
How many previews can I make?
Up to 6 a day on one device, free. If you need more, write to hello@stillbrookportraits.com and we'll help.
Photos
What makes a good photo?
- Their face and both ears are in the photo.
- The eyes are in focus.
- Daylight, ideally near a window, without harsh shadows.
- Taken at their eye level, not from high above.
- The larger the file, the better. At least 700 pixels on the short side works best.
Phone photos are perfect. You don't need a professional photo.
My only photo is old or blurry. Will it work?
Please try it. Many old photos work better than you'd expect. If a photo is too small or too blurry to do them justice, we'll tell you before you spend anything.
My pet is black or very dark. Will it look right?
Dark coats are harder for any portrait, so we take extra care. Choose a photo taken in daylight where you can see the eyes, and we check every dark-coated portrait so the background is light enough to show their face clearly. If you're not happy with the preview, try a brighter photo.
My photo is black and white. Can it be in color?
Yes. We'll ask whether you'd like to keep it black and white, in warm sepia tones, or add color. If you choose color, tell us their coat colors, and we'll follow that.
There are people in my photo. Is that a problem?
Not at all. We make the portrait of your pet only and leave people out. We don't analyze anyone's face.
What file types can I upload?
JPG, PNG and HEIC (iPhone photos), up to 20 MB each.
More than one pet
Can I put more than one pet in the portrait?
Yes, up to 3. Choose "Two pets" or "Three pets" when you upload. Add a second pet for $10, more for $20 each.
Do they need to be in the same photo?
No. Upload a separate photo of each pet, and we'll bring them together in one portrait. For 3 pets, our team prepares the preview by hand and emails it to you, usually within a few hours (by the next morning if it's late in the day).
Can I include a pet who has passed alongside one who is still with us?
Yes. Many people do. Upload a photo of each.
Do you do other animals, like horses or rabbits?
Often, yes. Upload a photo and we'll let you know. For animals other than dogs and cats, our team prepares the preview and emails it to you.

Which size should I choose?
16x16 for a shelf, desk or small wall. 20x20 for most living rooms. 24x24 or 30x30 above a sofa or fireplace. The paper print is 16x16 too, if you'd like to choose your own frame. Try taping the square on your wall for a day. It's the easiest way to decide. Size guide
What is the canvas like?
Gallery-wrapped canvas, 1.25 in deep: 344 g/m² poly-cotton canvas stretched over solid pine bars, with a satin finish and a soft, low-glare sheen. The print is fade-resistant. It arrives ready to hang, with mounting brackets included. Canvases and framed prints ship in a cardboard box, wrapped in tissue paper and bubble wrap or foam, with no prices inside.
What is the framed print like?
Your portrait printed on 189 g/m² Epson enhanced matte paper with Epson UltraChrome inks, in a black wood frame 0.75 in deep, with a lightweight acrylic front instead of glass. It arrives ready to hang, with hanging hardware included. The frame is taller than it is wide, so we crop the portrait to that shape around your pet's face.
What is the paper print like?
Your portrait printed on thick matte paper (189 g/m², 10.3 mil), 16 x 16 in. It's unframed, so you can choose your own frame (the frame isn't included). It ships rolled in a sturdy triangular box. If it curls a little, lay it flat under a book for a day before framing.
What's in the digital file?
A 4096 x 4096 pixel file of your portrait and a phone wallpaper version. We email you a download link after a person has checked it, usually within 1 business day. The link works for 30 days.
Shipping and timing
How long does it take?
We check every portrait and send it to print within 1 business day. Printing takes 2 to 5 business days, and standard shipping takes 3 to 5 business days. Most orders arrive 6 to 10 business days after ordering. A paper print ships rolled and takes 4 to 6 business days to reach you, so most arrive in about 10 business days. You'll see your "arrives by" date before you pay, and it's in your confirmation email.
Do you ship outside the US?
Not yet. We ship to addresses in the United States only.
Is shipping free?
Yes. Standard shipping within the US is free. It's also the only option: every portrait is printed to order, and there's no faster shipping to pay for.
How do I check on my order?
Use the order status page with your order number and email. We also email you when your portrait ships, with tracking.
Christmas
When do I need to order for Christmas?
- By December 7 if your order needs a proof (you left a change note, or your portrait has 3 pets).
- By December 9 with standard shipping.
It's after December 9. Is it too late?
Not for a gift. A digital file arrives by email, usually within 1 business day (order by December 22). Or send a gift card by email, today, and they can make their portrait whenever they like. Gift cards
Can I send it straight to the person it's for?
Yes. Enter their address at checkout. When you choose a size, you can add a gift message, and we print it on the packing slip. Prices are never on the packing slip.
Guarantee, changes and refunds
What is your guarantee?
- Free preview and refine before you pay.
- Free replacement if it arrives damaged or misprinted (report within 30 days with a photo).
- A free remake within 30 days if it doesn't feel like them. Still not right? A full refund.
It arrived damaged. What do I do?
We're sorry. Email hello@stillbrookportraits.com within 30 days with your order number and a photo of the damage, including the box. We'll send a free replacement. You don't need to send the damaged one back.
Can I cancel my order?
Before you approve a preview, you haven't paid for anything. After you order, write to us as soon as you can. If your portrait hasn't gone to print yet (we send each one within 1 business day), we'll cancel and refund you in full. Once printing starts, we can't cancel, but our guarantee still covers you.
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Because every portrait is made just for you, and you approve it before we print, we can't accept returns for a change of mind. If it arrives damaged or misprinted, we replace it free. If it doesn't feel like them, we'll remake it free within 30 days, and if it still isn't right, we'll refund you in full.
Privacy and your photos
What happens to my photo?
"Your photo is used only to make your portrait. It is processed by Google's Gemini API on a paid plan, which does not use it to train models. Previews you don't order are deleted after 30 days."
How long do you keep my photos if I order?
Your original photo for 190 days, and your finished portrait file for 380 days, so we can fix, reprint or remake it if anything goes wrong. Then they're deleted.
Can you delete my photos now?
Yes. Email hello@stillbrookportraits.com from the address you used. If you haven't ordered, we delete everything. If you have, we delete what we can and keep only the order records we're required to keep, until the window above ends.
Will you use my pet's portrait in your ads?
Only if you say yes, separately. We'll ask you after your portrait arrives, and it's completely optional.
Gift cards
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes, for $49, $89.99 or $119.99. We email the gift card to the person on the date you choose. They upload their own photo, see their preview and use the card at checkout. Gift cards don't expire. Gift cards and redeeming
